During the operations around Richmond, June 25 to July 2, 1862, known
as the Seven Days Battles, the Sixth Cavalry was detached from the Reserve
Brigade for duty with General Stoneman, and Greggs squadron (6th Cavalry)
was on the extreme right when the action opened. General Cooke personally commanded the cavalry which
formed the extreme rear guard, and really saved Fitz John Porters batteries,
which had been left without support at Gaines Mill.
