For platforms intending on >1k users, options like ejabberd would be more ideal. There is a migration path available from Prosody to ejabberd, to allow communities to be able to grow to more scalable options when appropriate. This doesn't mean Prosody is 'inferior', just that it targets a different profile and can be a simple moddable solution to start out with.
