Keep in mind that polar midnight is an Effect spell and not an Area spell (so mechanically speaking it functions closer to how fog cloud does than fireball ) and the rules for Effect spells with a spread explicitly say you must figure the distance by counting around walls and not through them (CRB, Magic, Spell Descriptors, Aiming a Spell , Effect): Spread: Some effects, notably clouds and fogs, spread out from a point of origin, which must be a grid intersection.
